(HU) „Arra buzdítalak tehát benneteket, hogy szemeteket és szíveteket emeljétek föl Krisztusra, aki szeretetének tervét akarja megosztani veletek. Reá figyeljetek, benne bízzatok. Legyetek állhatatos és bátor ifjú keresztények! Szépséges ifjúságtok öröme ekkor lesz hiteles és teljes!”

(EN) “I encourage you to raise your eyes and lift your hearts to Christ who wants share with you the plan of His love. Pay attention to Him, trust in Him. Be persistent and brave young Christians! The joy of your beautiful youth will be genuine and complete!”

(IT) „Io, pertanto, vi esorto ad elevare lo sguardo e il cuore verso Cristo, che vuole rendervi partecipi del suo progetto di amore. Guardate a Lui, fidatevi totalmente di Lui. (HU) „Ne várjátok azt, hogy mások gondoskodjanak rólatok. Legyetek vállalkozó szelleműek és nagylelkűek. Házatok akkor lesz igazán a tiétek, ha magatok építitek. Ha holnap visszagondoltok mai fáradságos törekvéseitekre, akkor még nagyobb örömötöket találjátok majd benne.”

(EN) “Do not wait for others to provide for you. Be intrepid and generous. Your house will only be truly yours if you build it. If tomorrow you will recall the exhausting efforts of today, you will find an even greater joy in them.”

(HU) „Legyetek erősek! Tudom jól, milyen nehéz ma a fiatalok helyzete. Bárhová megyek, mindenütt alkalmam nyílik megfigyelni a fiatalok elvárásait, csalódásait és reménységeit. Állás- és lakáshiány, gazdasági nehézségek és a bűnözés terjedése, a család válsága és az értékek pusztulása, magány és magukrahagyatottság, a siker hajszolása és menekülés a kábítószerekhez. Íme, néhány jelensége az ifjúság soraiban terjedő társadalmi nyugtalanságoknak.”

(EN) “Be strong! I know well how difficult is the life of youngster today. Anywhere I go, I have the opportunity to observe the expectations, the disappointments and the hopes of youngsters. Lack of workplaces and housing, economic difficulties and the spreading of criminality, the crisis of the family and the destruction of values, loneliness and unseconded condition, the pursuit of success and the escape into drugs. Behold, some of the phenomena of the social unsettling that is growing among the youth.”

(IT) „Siate forti! So bene quanto difficile sia attualmente la condizione dei giovani. Ovunque mi reco, ho occasione di rendermi conto delle attese, delle delusioni e delle speranze dell’universo giovanile. Mancanza di lavoro e carenza di alloggi, difficoltà economica e incremento della delinquenza, crisi della famiglia e caduta dei valori, solitudine e incomunicabilità, voglia di successo ed evasione nella droga. Ecco alcuni sintomi di un malessere sociale che serpeggia fra i giovani.”

(HU) „Legyetek biztosak benne: Isten nem köti gúzsba, nem teszi sivárrá ifjúságtokat, nem zavarja meg örömötöket. Éppen ellenkezőleg! Hatalma távolból sem olyan erő, amely korlátoz, hanem olyan dinamizmus, amely a teljes kifejlődéshez vezet, a testi, a szellemi és az érzelmi élet kibontakoztatásához, a hit növekedéséhez; az egyre tevékenyebb és tágasabb szeretethez önmagatok, felebarátotok, az égi és földi valóságok iránt.”

(EN) “Be sure: God does not tie your youth down, does not make it desolate, does not disturb your joy. On the contrary! His might is far from being a limiting power, rather it is a dynamism that leads to the full development, to the unfolding of the bodily, spiritual and emotional life, to the growth of faith; to the increasingly active and more spacious love towards yourselves, your neighbor, to the heavenly and earthly realities.”

“There’s also the loneliness that can come with being pope. When you’re elected to the papacy, you have to leave your old life behind. You give up everything, even your name. The new name you take when you ascend to the Chair of Peter symbolizes the new identity you’re assuming. The old you is gone. The new you lives according to the demands of the Church and the expectations of Vatican protocol. 

John Paul II, however, didn’t completely buy into that line of of thinking. When he could, he fought it. He didn’t want to stop enjoying life because he was now the pope. He didn’t want to cut off ties to so much of what he loved. So, in the midst of Vatican demands and expectations, he carved out a space for himself in which he could find the peace, recreation, and laughter that he knew were essential to a well-ordered life.”
